Datura metel, also known as Indian Thornapple and Devil's Trumpet, is a vine in the Datura family that, like other Daturas, originated in the Americas, but ethno-linguistic and religious iconography evidence suggest that it was introduced to the Indian subcontinent before Columbian contact between Eurasia and the Americas. It is possible that D. metel is the plant referenced as "thornapple" in medieval herbals.
Daturas have a rich history as an entheogen and ritual plant. The plant is toxic, and poisoning can induce hallucinations along with other symptoms. It is for this reason that it has been hypothesized to be a component of witches' "flying salves." The black paper used for this illustration makes the characteristic white flowers of the Datura pop, as well as adding witchy charm to the piece.
