Those who know me know that my favorite thing is tea, so when I found the first English-language reference to tea in the 1598 translation of the journals of Jan Huygen van Linschoten, I knew I needed to make a painting based on it. Van Linschoten described a beverage made with powdered “chaa” mixed into warm water, which is similar to how modern Japanese matcha is prepared and has its historical roots in Chinese imperial tea culture. Add an Early Modern touch to your tea room or parlor with this print of an original watercolor illustration of Camellia sinensis, the tea plant, with the earliest English-language description of the plant.
